History of Matryoshka Nesting Dolls

The word Matryoshka comes from the common name for female women in Russia. It is a symbol of motherhood and fertility.There is alot of confusion regarding the name-  the word "Babushka" has often been used to describe these dolls. In fact, Babushka means grandmother and is not the correct term for the Matryoshka nesting dolls.

The Matryoshka nesting dolls nestle inside one another and are beautifully hand crafted and hand painted and represent the family.The basic technique of making the dolls has remained unchanged over the years. They are made from lime, birch, alder or aspen trees. The logs to be used are dried in the open air for two years and then each doll is created by an experienced master. When carving each doll, no measurements are used, only the intuition and skill of the master is involved! Once each doll has been created, it is then hand painted.
